What does a staycation in the heart of Kuala Lumpur actually look like? When we think of staycations, usually, our minds would go to the “resort” style getaway. Of infinity pools, spas, and perhaps even formal dining rooms. Last weekend, however, we at The Grid Asia opted for something slightly different. We checked into citizenM Kuala Lumpur, an intimate city hotel perched on the bustling Jalan Pudu. What citizenM offers as a hotel is rather different from our traditional view of luxury. Instead, what we got is an intersection of high-tech efficiency and curated style.
When staying at a hotel, we like to unpack the experience according to three different key points: Connectivity, Lifestyle Amenities, and of course, the In-Room Experience itself. We spent the weekend putting each of these to the test to see how this citizenM Kuala Lumpur holds up. Here is a closer look at how our stay unfolded, starting with the most important factor for any urban explorer: the location.
Connectivity: KL at Your Doorstep
Honestly, the connectivity of citizenM Kuala Lumpur is amazing. Because the hotel is placed in such a strategic spot in the city, it is only steps away from many key urban destinations.
Exit the hotel lobby and what do we see? The trendy, nine-floor creative community hub, GMBB, just across the street. We found ourselves spending most of our time here, and truthfully, even an entire day is not enough to explore all it has to offer. From trendy food spots like Too Yum to aesthetic, rustic cafes like Jiak Kopi, the mall is a goldmine for anyone who likes to discover cool, new things.
What makes this connectivity so special is the interactivity. GMBB offers a dizzying array of creative workshops. You can literally walk in and spend a whole day making handmade soaps, blending your own custom lipsticks, or crafting a cute DIY pocket mirror. It’s a space that showcases Malaysian talent in a way that allows you to participate in the process.
As night falls, the hotel’s location reveals its second act. Just behind the property lies Jalan Alor. Within minutes, you transition from a sleek, modern lobby to the bustling, smoke-filled, lantern-lit streets of KL’s most famous food thoroughfare. The walk through the street food vendors and gorgeous street lights is a sensory overload in the best way possible. And if you have any energy left, a few more steps lead you directly into the heart of Bukit Bintang’s high-end shopping and nightlife; the famed Bukit Bintang road. We could even see the bright Pavilion signage from Jalan Alor, standing tall and proud as a shining landmark.

Lifestyle Amenities: More Than Just a Hotel
Now, this is where citizenM feels a little different from your typical hotel. It’s an intimate hotel that knows its audience: the working professional, the digital nomad, and the “bleisure” traveller (of business and leisure, those of us who want a staycation but can’t quite leave the laptop at home).
There is no pool. There is no spa. For some, that’s a dealbreaker, but for the citizenM guest, it’s a deliberate choice. The hotel focuses its energy on shared spaces that actually serve a purpose. The Ground Floor and Mezzanine Floor are designed as fluid, open spaces for people to work, meet, and socialise, featuring a variety of seating styles to suit your mood.
The G Floor feels free and easy, with CanteenM at the ready for whenever we need a caffeine fix or a bite while we work. On a warm Friday afternoon, we settled into one of the work tables — cleverly equipped with power outlets — and enjoyed a glass of iced matcha and iced chocolate as we typed away. Moving up, the M Floor offers more of a polished office feel, featuring meeting rooms called societyM. While guests are free to use these spaces as they please, there is also an attractive offer for non-guests: day passes for RM60 to access the coworking facilities. It is because of this that we see citizenM as more than just a hotel; it is a functional, seamless co-working hub designed for the modern rhythm of the city.

Then, there’s the food. CanteenM is the central F&B outlet, serving daily breakfast buffets with a menu that rotates so you won’t get bored. The rice noodle soup on Saturday morning was a personal favourite of ours, paired with free-flow fresh hot coffee and tea from the bar. While the selection is humble, every bite feels warm and home-cooked. Outside of breakfast hours, they serve a range of great à la carte dishes. We sampled quite a few, but the Bangers and Mash and the Chicken Cordon Bleu (this one being an April special) were the standouts.

The In-Room Experience: Smart Luxury
This was, quite frankly, our favourite part of the stay. It’s rare to say this about a city hotel, but booking a room here just to stay in the room is a valid weekend plan.
CitizenM is world-renowned as a “smart hotel,” but what does that actually mean for the guest? It means that your room is essentially controlled by a single iPad, sitting on your nightstand.
From this one device, you have total mastery over your environment. Want to change the lighting to a moody purple or a bright reading white? Two taps. Need to adjust the temperature because the Malaysian humidity is creeping in? One swipe. You can control the TV, the curtains, and the blinds without ever leaving the comfort of your king bed.
We all know that feeling when you’re already tucked in bed ready to sleep, only to realise you forgot to turn off the lights. Normally, you’d have to get out of bed (excruciatingly so) just to turn them off. But here at citizenM, all we had to do was take the iPad right next to the bed, press a few buttons, and the lights were off.
The Verdict
A staycation at citizenM Kuala Lumpur isn’t about being pampered in the traditional sense; it’s about being understood. It’s a hotel that respects your time, your need for connectivity, and your love for a smart, seamless experience.
Whether you’re a local looking to rediscover the creative pulse of KL or a digital nomad seeking a stylish base of operations, this intimate city spot proves that sometimes, the best way to experience KL is to live right in the heart of it — with an iPad in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.
It’s efficient, it’s tech-savvy, and it’s undeniably fun. We’ll definitely be back — if only to master the art of the “one-tap” light switch again.
