The world we live in is an interesting place.

Have you ever noticed that these days, the world seems to be more littered than ever with quirky little trinkets? You would go about your day, come across strangers who are going about their day, and lo and behold — what do you see perched atop their nifty little phonecase? A tiny trinket of a naked baby. ‘How odd,’ you would think to yourself. But you will continue to spend the rest of your day as you usually would. And then you spot yet another odd-looking fellow dangling freely on some random passerby’s bag. A fluffy doll of a rather scary-looking monster. Again, ‘How odd’.

What are these… eccentric… items that seem to have taken over the world by storm? Where do they come from? Why do people have them? Buy them, even?

Blind Boxes: The New Craze

Ever heard about the blind box craze? Who am I kidding? Of course you have. You see them all over the internet, all across shopping malls. But, if you’re wondering what they are specifically, keep reading.

It’s a fun, slightly addictive phenomenon where you buy a mystery package, its contents a total surprise – hence the “blind” part! Imagine unwrapping a little box, not knowing if you’ve scored the rare, limited-edition figure or just another common character. Some blind boxes are a complete gamble, a true mystery until you tear them open – like a mini Christmas morning! More commonly these days, however, you get a sneak peek at the possibilities: a set collection of adorable figurines, trendy accessories, or quirky collectibles.

The thrill is in the randomness. You might get your desired item on the first try, or it might take a few more tries. That rush of excitement, that “yes!” moment when you get what you want, is absolutely addictive – like winning a mini-lottery!  And a huge part of the appeal is the collecting aspect. Think of Pop Mart, for example. They release series of adorable collectibles, maybe six regular ones and one super-rare “secret” figure. The fun isn’t just getting something – it’s trying to complete the whole set! It’s the joy of the hunt, the satisfaction of finally getting that last piece, and the bragging rights that come with owning the entire collection. It’s like a treasure hunt for adorable little figures.

A Phenomenon of an Acceptable Gambling Addiction?

So, what’s the deal with these blind boxes taking over the world?  Are we all secretly gambling addicts? Maybe a little. That “just one more box” feeling can be pretty strong. Or perhaps it’s the ultimate case of FOMO – fear of missing out – that drives us to join the craze. Let’s be real, seeing everyone unboxing adorable figures on social media definitely adds to the temptation. And it’s no accident that many blind box companies target young adults. But why young adults? I have a theory: I think many of us young adults are just eager to heal our inner child.

Blind Boxes Are A Way To Heal The Inner Child

Think about it. These blind boxes are packed with the silliest, cutest toys and collectibles imaginable. It’s just fun to have them, to arrange them on your shelves, to build a little whimsical world of trinkets.  And these young adults? They were kids once, too. Maybe they longed for toys they couldn’t have. Now, equipped with their grown-up wallets and their own hard-earned cash, they can buy whatever their heart desires. It’s the definition of having your own adult money! No parents saying “no,” no friends judging their spending habits (judging? More like encouraging). If it makes you happy, go for it!  The only person stopping you is yourself.

So, yeah, maybe there’s a little thrill of the gamble involved (though let’s be honest, it’s a far cry from high-stakes poker). But I truly believe a huge part of the draw is that these blind boxes, filled with silly, delightful toys, offer a chance to recapture a bit of childhood magic. It’s a way to indulge in a little bit of playful joy, a way to say, “I deserve this,” and a way to finally get that toy you always wanted.  It’s not just about the stuff; it’s about healing that inner kid and letting them have some fun.

A Sense of Eccentricity

I guess, for certain blind box collections such as the Labubu or Sonny Angels, their eccentricity is part of why they’re so popular. Who would’ve thought to collect figures of unclothed fetuses or mythical nordic monsters? But that’s the magic, isn’t it? We’re drawn to the odd, the unique, the things that make us tilt our heads and go, “Huh?”  Especially in today’s world of rampant social media, where these quirky creatures are often romanticised and amplified, the allure becomes even stronger. Seeing these little oddballs posed in hilarious situations or showcased in aesthetically pleasing displays can definitely ignite a spark of “I need that!” in even the most sensible among us.

Blind Boxes: For Adults or Children?

Now, when you think of toys, your mind probably jumps straight to kids, right? Little ones appealing to their parents for the latest action figure or doll.  And while that’s certainly a big part of the toy market, it’s not the whole story. Sure, some lucky kids have parents who can shower them with every blind box, plushie, or trading card their heart desires. But let’s be real, that’s not the reality for most. So, who else is out there snapping up these sometimes-overpriced treasures?  Enter the young adults, the millennials, the Gen Z-ers – the ones with their own hard-earned cash and a burning passion for these collectibles. They’re not just buying toys; they’re investing in a piece of joy, a dash of nostalgia, and a way to heal that inner child of theirs.

Toys, too!

And this “inner child healing” phenomenon isn’t limited to blind boxes. It extends to all sorts of collectibles and toys. Think about Jellycat, for example.  Those adorably quirky plushies with names like “Bashful Bunny” and “Amuseable Avocado” are just irresistible, no matter your age. They’re soft, cuddly, and evoke a sense of childlike wonder. Or take Pokémon cards. While they might seem like a kid’s game at first glance, the serious collecting community is largely made up of adults who are willing to shell out serious money for rare and valuable cards.  It’s a testament to the enduring appeal of these childhood passions, and how they can evolve into a serious hobby – and a serious investment – in adulthood.

Ultimately, it seems the world’s fascination with these seemingly frivolous trinkets reveals a deeper human longing. We’re not just buying toys; we’re buying a feeling, a connection to a simpler time, a moment of pure, unadulterated joy. In a world that often feels overwhelming and complex, these little treasures offer an escape, a reminder that it’s okay to embrace the whimsical and the playful. So, the next time you see someone excitedly unboxing these silly blind boxes, remember that a blind box houses more than just a toy. It’s a tiny portal to a world of childlike wonder, a testament to the enduring power of play, and a reminder that sometimes, the best way to navigate the complexities of adulthood is to let your inner child lead the way.
