Slowing down has always been a part of the afternoon tea ritual. Cups filled with tea, delicate bites stacked high on tiered stands, and light conversation with the right people. This October, in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Renaissance Kuala Lumpur has launched a special pink-themed afternoon tea. One that has a cause and purpose behind it.

the pink hour, a campaign for breast cancer awareness month

Introducing The Pink Hour, a month-long campaign marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, created together with the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM). The centrepiece is The Pink Hour Afternoon Tea Set, now being served at the hotel’s signature R Bar.

A Launch Afternoon in Pink

The campaign debuted at R Bar before the month began, with media guests, partners and hotel ambassadors filling the room. Officiating were Mandy Thoo, Deputy Director of Community Engagement and HELPP, NCSM, and Martin Ehlers, Multi-Property General Manager of Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel & Convention Centre and Four Points by Sheraton Kuala Lumpur, City Centre.

The mood was warm during the afternoon of the launch. Dr. Ng Char Hong, Consultant Breast & Breast Reconstructive Surgeon at Picasso Hospital spoke with guests about spotting the early signs of trouble and why regular screening is important, even amidst busy schedules. A hands-on breast examination clinic gave attendees a practical lesson in self-awareness, and a playful word game kept the afternoon light.

The most memorable moment belonged to Janagi K. Guruswamy, the day’s Guest of Honour and a breast cancer survivor. She shared the story of her own recovery. And her calm, steady telling gave everything else said that afternoon a deeper meaning.

What Is on the Table

Then came the tea itself. The set arrives as a generous spread of handcrafted bites, both savoury and sweet, each one designed around the pink ribbon that has come to symbolise the fight against breast cancer. It is an elegant way to gather friends, a mother, a sister or a colleague for an afternoon that doubles as a gesture of support.

At Renaissance, we celebrate the neighbourhood and the communities around us. With the National Cancer Society Malaysia being merely steps away from the hotel, this collaborative campaign is especially meaningful. We hope to create greater awareness through The Pink Hour campaign, while supporting a cause that touches many lives. We believe with the unveiling of The Pink Hour Afternoon Tea Set at R Bar, the offering comes with a purpose where our guests can benefit from enjoying the experience while contributing towards breast cancer awareness and patient care.

Raising awareness about breast cancer and encouraging early screening requires collective effort. This partnership with Renaissance Kuala Lumpur strengthens that shared commitment and advances the cause even further. We warmly welcome this collaboration and thank Renaissance Kuala Lumpur for its support, which will help make a meaningful difference to the women who will benefit from the proceeds.

Professor Dr. Murallitharan Munisamy, Managing Director of National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM).
