Volvo Car Malaysia has officially launched the evolved EX90, its fully electric seven-seater SUV, now assembled locally in Shah Alam. The update touches almost everything under the skin, from the electrical architecture to the safety systems, and positions the EX90 as the brand’s flagship electric SUV for the Malaysian market.
Pricing starts at RM428,888, before insurance. The first 100 buyers to book will receive RM25,000 in cash rebates along with a complimentary Volvo Wallbox worth RM3,990.
A Serious Jump in Performance
The biggest mechanical change is the move to an 800-volt electrical architecture, paired with a Twin Motor All-Wheel-Drive setup. Together they produce 680 hp and 870 Nm of torque, taking the SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, quick numbers for a seven-seat family SUV.
The 800V system also brings practical benefits. Volvo says it reduces overall weight, cuts heat build-up during charging, and improves sustainability through lower copper usage, all while still delivering more power. Range sits at up to 617 km on a single charge from the 106-kWh battery. With 350kW DC fast charging, the battery goes from 10 to 80 percent in around 22 minutes.
Smarter Underneath the Surface
The EX90 now runs on an NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin-based core computer, with Volvo’s Superset software stack layered on top. This setup allows for more frequent, more efficient over-the-air updates, covering everything from infotainment to battery management.
Inside, the cabin is built around three displays: a 9-inch driver screen, a 14.5-inch centre touchscreen, and a head-up display, all running Google’s built-in services, including Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Play Store. A Bowers & Wilkins high-fidelity sound system handles the audio.
Safety Built Around People
The EX90 is shaped by Volvo’s Selamat philosophy, its road safety approach for the Malaysian market. Its Safe Space Technology combines radar, sensors, and ultrasonic detection to build a real-time read of the road around the car. Inside the cabin, twin infrared sensors form the Driver Understanding System, watching for signs of distraction or impairment and stepping in when needed.
A standout feature is the interior radar system, sensitive enough to pick up the faint breathing of a sleeping child, a safeguard against anyone being left behind in the car. Next-generation Pilot Assist and Park Pilot Assist round out the driver support systems.
Scandinavian Design, Familiar and Refined
The exterior keeps to Volvo’s clean, minimal design language, with flush glazing and rounded overhangs shaping a smooth, aerodynamic silhouette. Inside, the cabin uses ventilated Nappa leather and natural wood trim, with an electrochromic roof that adjusts light and temperature at the touch of a button. Buyers can pick between Charcoal Nappa with Light Ash decor or Cardamom Nappa with Brown Ash, and the exterior comes in five colours, from Onyx Black to Mulberry Red.
An Update for the ES90, Too
Volvo’s electric saloon, the ES90, is also getting a refresh for model year 2027. Updates include two new exterior colours, Mulberry and Aurora Silver, a new Cardamom interior option, 21-inch Glossy-Silver wheels, and wireless Android Auto support. Bookings open as early as this September, with cash rebates of up to RM17,600.
Together, the EX90 and ES90 mark a fairly aggressive push for Volvo’s electric line-up in Malaysia, one that leans on genuine performance and safety upgrades rather than just a new coat of paint.
