Some restaurants close and are simply gone. Others close and somehow stay open in people’s minds for decades, brought up at dinner parties, mentioned in passing by parents to their kids, remembered fondly by anyone who ever sat at one of its tables. And Chalet, the old dining destination at the original Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur, is very much the latter.

Once again, EQ makes room for a bit of nostalgia. Chalet, the beloved restaurant that first found its home at what was then Hotel Equatorial Kuala Lumpur, returns like clockwork, and this year, it’s back from 13 to 31 August 2026.

The Chalet Nostalgia

Opened in 1974, Chalet wasn’t just another restaurant on the KL dining scene. It was the place. The kind of restaurant where the waiters knew your name, where dishes were prepared right at your table, and where an evening out felt like an event rather than a mere meal. People didn’t go to Chalet just to eat. They went to celebrate, to catch up, to make memories that stick.

That’s the spirit this revival is chasing. It’s about bringing back a whole way of dining, one built on warmth, ceremony and a little bit of theatre.

What’s on the Table

The menu reads like a love letter to old-school European dining. Salade César gets tossed tableside the traditional way, while Raclette Traditionnelle brings the nostalgia with melted cheese, baby potatoes and cornichons. For mains, expect the ever-reliable Lobster Thermidor and the showstopping Canard à la Presse, a duck dish pressed tableside for two using the classic duck press — a ritual that’s become something of a rarity these days.

Dessert doesn’t hold back either. Crêpes Suzette and Cerises Jubilé arrive with their signature flambé finish, while Sabayon du Chalet makes its comeback as the restaurant’s much-loved “dancing dessert.” It’s a finale that gets the whole table watching. A full-on show.

Rounding out the evening is the CNJ Trio, back to serenade guests with the same evergreen tunes that once filled the original dining room, a soundtrack familiar to old regulars and brand new to everyone else.

A Merdeka Day Send-Off

Chalet’s short-lived return wraps up on a high note with a Merdeka Day Brunch on 31 August. Served semi-buffet style with all the Chalet classics, it’s shaping up to be a relaxed, celebratory way to spend Malaysia’s Independence Day with the people who matter.

The Details

Chalet will be open for dinner from Monday to Saturday, 6PM to 11PM, with a special Merdeka Eve Dinner on 30 August from 6PM to 11PM. The Merdeka Day Brunch on 31 August runs from 12PM to 3PM and marks the final seating before Chalet bows out again.
