Let’s be honest, most luxury watches play it pretty safe. They’re silver, they’re round, and they’re designed to blend in with a suit. But Alexander Shorokhoff has never been one for “blending in.” The German atelier’s latest job, the Kandy Fantasy, feels like a traditional timepiece and more like a miniature masterpiece that just happens to tell the time.
Now available in Malaysia through Red Army Watches, this limited-edition beauty is proof that watchmaking doesn’t always have to be so serious.
A Square That’s Anything But Boring
Forget the standard circular case. The Kandy Fantasy leans into a bold, 41 x 41mm rectangular stainless steel frame. But here’s the cool part: there are no visible lugs. The strap attaches discreetly to the back, giving the watch a clean, architectural look that feels incredibly modern.
And because Alexander Shorokhoff loves a “hidden” detail, the case sides feature tiny cut-outs, while the back reveals four coloured glass inserts in red, yellow and blue. It’s a literal pop of colour that only the wearer knows is there.
The Dial: A Geometric Playground
If you’re tired of staring at plain dials, this one is for you. It’s a mix of textures and tones that shouldn’t work together, yet somehow they do perfectly:
The “Wow” Factor: A black-and-white geometric centre motif paired with genuine mother-of-pearl.
The “Wait, That’s the Date?” Factor: At 6 o’clock, you’ll find a colourful mother-of-pearl inlay that houses the date in a way that feels more like a design choice than a chore.
The “Primary” Power: Long, slender hands with circular cut-outs in red, yellow and black sweep across the face. It’s whimsical, vibrant and impossible to ignore.
Serious Specs, Not-So-Serious Style
Despite the playful exterior, the Kandy Fantasy is a powerhouse under the hood. It’s driven by a Swiss automatic movement (ETA 2892 / SW300). The rotor is hand-engraved and decorated with blued screws, proving that German precision and Swiss reliability can still have a sense of humour.
One of the Only Thirty
In a world of mass-produced everything, “limited edition” actually means something here. With only 30 pieces available worldwide, the chances of spotting another one on someone else’s wrist at a dinner party are slim to none.
Finished off with a checked fabric-covered leather strap that ties all those avant-garde colours together, the Kandy Fantasy is the perfect antidote to “boring watch syndrome.” The Kandy Fantasy is loud, it’s proud, and it’s a whole lot of fun.
