Mercedes-Benz is a name synonymous with the qualities of luxury and comfort, and the E300 is an excellent example of the German automaker’s brilliance in delivering such standards time and time again. Most recently, I had the pleasure of taking the E300 AMG Line out for a test drive for some days. So allow me to share my first-hand experience with the new E-class Saloon without being too punctilious on its specs and details.

My first impression upon laying eyes on the exterior was that the design carried a semblance that successfully portrays the luxury sedan as a sporty and comfortable character. The high-gloss finished front grilles are a standout feature that was introduced with the release of the C-class earlier last year, but is slightly enlarged on the E300, completed with a subtle silver outline that perfectly frames the iconic Mercedes-Benz logo. The sleek, angular lines  flow harmoniously with the headlamps, accentuating its dynamic elements all while providing maximum airflow to the turbocharged 2.0-litre engine.

On the rear, the broad shoulders of the E300 is fitted with elegantly stylish tail lights, complemented by the twin exhausts that are seamlessly integrated with the bumper to accentuate its athletic profile.

The spacious comfort cabin was welcoming to say the least. Black open-pore ash wood courses throughout the interior, pairing perfectly well with the slightly tinted panoramic sunroof and plush leather seats that create this homey sense of calmness as the cabin is basked in the warmth of the evening sun. Though I found the multi-colour ambient lighting to be a really nice touch as it added some depth to the ash wood at night, some selection of colours may come off as a little distracting or even tacky. But, this is certainly a feature that can be turned off easily from the infotainment system, which we’ll talk about next.

The E300 boasts a digital cockpit with its intelligent infotainment system harboured within the large centre touchscreen that runs along the entire dashboard.  Ergonomic touch controls are also strategically placed in the tunnel console and the restyled steering wheel, making it easy for passengers to access their favourite music, navigation, comfort settings, and various information on vehicle performance. The highly intuitive safety features such as the lane tracking and departure warning, active parking assist, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and other functions can be operated with ease as well.

Now, on to the drive.

The turbocharged engine delivered a smooth, powerful and highly responsive acceleration right from the get go, hitting 100 km/h in just about 6 seconds. There are 4 different drive modes to switch from with the simple flick of a lever placed along the tunnel console, that is, Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes. When driving within the city, Eco and Comfort modes were of course my go to settings as it kept the cabin real calm and restful as I indulged in the rich and immersive audio courtesy of Burmester® surround sound system.

At cruising speed, the Saloon felt anchored and stable as it glided on the tarmac road in an effortless motion. The handling is also commendably impressive, providing for a comfortable ride thanks to its well-balanced and responsive chassis. When testing out the Sport+ mode on the open highway, the E300 turned into a whole different kind of cruiser altogether. The pick-up was discernibly quicker as the steering wheel felt slightly more weighted. Essentially, this mode sharpened the vehicle’s performance by allowing its revs to run higher before gear shifts, reaching speeds of approximately 200 km/h in mere seconds from cruising. The deep and assertive roar of the turbocharged engine stood out to prove that the dynamic sportiness of the E-class was indeed to be reckoned with.

I must say that the entirety of my experience with the all-new E300 AMG Line has been a delight. In short, the E300 will be the ideal choice for those who are seeking for a pleasant driving experience around town, yet appreciate the thrill of unleashing its full sporty potential on the open roads.
