Who doesn’t love a good afternoon tea? A plate of pretty snacks, paired with a perfectly brewed cup of tea. Well, this one is more like a story, told delicacy by delicacy, with each bite pulling you further into the spirit of the season. The Mid-Autumn Bliss Afternoon Tea at R Bar, Renaissance Kuala Lumpur, is built around togetherness, and you can taste it in every element on the tray.

The lineup changes with the season, and this round leans into flavours that instantly bring Mid-Autumn to mind. Everything arrives bite sized, which means you get to sample a bit of everything without committing your whole appetite to just one dish. Savoury lover or sweet tooth, there’s something on the tower for every palate.

Setting the Mid-Autumn Scene

The table looks the part too. The tiered tray comes dressed and ready for photos before you even have a chance to pick anything up, and the set includes a choice of tea or coffee to pair with the little delights. We settled in at R Bar on an afternoon when the sun was pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows, warm and golden, which made the whole experience feel unhurried in the best way.

Alongside the main tray, the table gets a couple of extras: fresh scones and a small plate of crisp green grapes, both good for pacing yourself between the richer bites.

The Savoury Tier

We started, as one does, from the bottom. The lowest tier of the tower is where all the savoury snacks live, and if you’re the kind of person who reaches for salty before sweet, this level is going to hold your attention.

The lotus root and prawn paste toast was a personal favourite. It comes out crispy and deep fried, but never greasy, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. Next to it sat a purple yam and chicken floss sandwich, tucked between a soft red bean milk bun, and a smoked duck and hoisin mini mantao bun with a nice sweet-savoury balance. Rounding out the tier was a mini vegetarian dumpling with mushroom and water chestnut, which we devoured tastefully.

The Sweet Tier

Then comes the part everyone secretly waits for. Delicate sweet treats like these are what an afternoon tea setting is really made for, and this batch leaned heavily into flavours that feel distinctly Mid-Autumn.

The black sesame macaroon is a familiar taste at this time of year, nutty and just sweet enough. The green tea raspberry cake stood out too, topped with a tiny white rabbit that made it almost too cute to eat, almost. Beyond those, the tier also included a vanilla mousse, mango veil, and peanut sable, a honeydew sago pearl pudding, and a jasmine tea mousse with lychee jelly, light and floral in equal measure.

For a proper local touch, there’s the durian musang king mochi, chewy on the outside and rich, unmistakably durian, at its centre.

Worth the Visit This Mid-Autumn Season

Between the light streaming in, the tea in hand, and a tower’s worth of treats to work through, the Mid-Autumn Bliss Afternoon Tea at R Bar makes for a proper afternoon well spent. It’s the kind of spread built for sharing, so bring someone along and let the tower do the talking.
