After a long, demanding week of work, it’s safe to say that a good break is much needed. “It’s Friday night, what are you up to, perhaps?” People spend this exciting time of week in many different ways. But their goal remains the same: to unwind the stress accumulated throughout the week. Some might opt for a lively night out with friends, while others prefer catching the latest blockbuster at the cinema.

But for us at The Grid Asia, we decided that this week called for something a little more indulgent. We found our solace in a hearty, soul-soothing feast at the Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur Hotel. More specifically, the “Wave & Grill” buffet at Essence Restaurant.

A Big Feast

Walking into the restaurant, the first thing you may notice is the atmosphere. The lights are kept beautifully dim — a sophisticated, cosy setting that perfectly captures the “end-of-week” mood.

Once you approach the buffet spread, you’d be absolutely spoilt for choice. The “Wave & Grill” buffet is Mediterranean-inspired, and they’ve certainly leaned into that theme. We spent a good while exploring the Middle Eastern section, where we were quickly won over by the crispy, flavourful falafel paired with creamy tahini, and the melt-in-your-mouth shish kebab.

Other options we found are savoury, smoky seafood paella, a charming pasta station where the dish is finished right inside a wheel of Parmigiano, and dedicated carving stations serving up impressive signature mains like succulent tomahawk or a whole roasted grouper. Best believe we devoured and enjoyed them all.

A Seafood Lover’s Paradise

While the variety is broad enough to satisfy any palate, for those of us who live for seafood, this buffet felt like stepping into a little slice of heaven.

The cold selection is a standout, featuring premium offerings on ice: plump prawns, mussels, sweet scallops, and fresh oysters that taste of the ocean in the absolute best way possible. But the real star of the show? The live grill station.

It’s an incredibly seamless experience. You simply pick your preferred seafood — we highly recommend the red snapper, lobster, and tiger prawns — hand it over to the chef, and they grill it to order right in front of you. Even better, you don’t have to linger by the grill; once it’s cooked to perfection, the team brings the piping-hot plate directly to your table. And trust us, we’re still daydreaming about those tiger prawns to this day.

Always Room for Dessert

Even after a feast of that magnitude, we all know there is a separate compartment in the stomach for dessert. The spread here is generous, featuring an array of cakes and sweet treats, but the highlight for us was the tiramisu. Some might argue that tiramisu is a bit “overrated,” but is it really, when it hits the spot so perfectly every single time?
