In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Jinn Pinn Minn (JPM) Group and CETA Green Technologies have unveiled plans to develop the first-ever state-of-the-art electric vehicle (EV) and hydrogen-power test, development, and certification hub in ASEAN. This ambitious project aims to position Malaysia as a leader in the rapidly growing green technology sector. Aligned with the Government’s Green Technology Master Plan 2030, which emphasises the development and utilisation of clean energy systems, the initiative spearheaded by JPM Group and CETA Green Technologies aims to propel Malaysia to the forefront of green mobility innovation.

With an initial capital investment ranging from US$35 million to US$50 million, the facility’s location will be strategically chosen within the vicinity of the Klang Valley. This move demonstrates the commitment of both companies to establish a hub that fosters innovation and development in the field of green mobility.

During the project’s announcement, Mr. Chin Jit Pyng, Chairman of JPM Group, emphasised that the planned facility would fill a crucial void in testing, development, and certification of batteries and hydrogen powertrains. Moreover, it would provide Malaysia with a platform to drive advancements and innovation in this field. In his speech, Chin highlighted the urgency of embracing cleaner and greener mobility solutions in the face of the escalating threat of global warming.

Recognising the gaps in Malaysia’s automotive market, Chin remarked, “Our study of the industry showed us that there was a void that needed to be filled, especially here in Malaysia. While much focus has been given to the import, sales, and infrastructure surrounding the end product and end user, there is a lack of attention to the quality, safety, and longevity of EV products gaining ground in our automotive market.

Observing the absence of facilities dedicated to ensuring battery safety, longevity, and research and development of this emerging technology in Malaysia and the region, JPM Group and CETA Green Technologies conducted an in-depth study. Through consultation with Ricardo Plc, a renowned global leader in engineering excellence, the concept of a cutting-edge test, development, and certification hub gained viability.

To realise their ambitious vision, JPM Group and CETA Green Technologies have enlisted the expertise of Ricardo Plc as the main technical delivery partner. Dr. Leon Rosario, Ricardo’s regional president, expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity to expand their presence in Malaysia and nurture local talent to support the growing ASEAN energy transition sector. The project is expected to provide a training platform for developing the Malaysian workforce in the electric vehicle technology space.

Receiving positive feedback following an initial presentation to the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation and its affiliated agencies, namely the Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology & Innovation (MRANTI), Nano Malaysia, and the Malaysia National Applied Research and Development Centre (MIMOS), the initiative has garnered support from key stakeholders.

Apart from serving manufacturers in the industry, the hub will also facilitate research and development activities for Malaysian industry players, fostering a culture of innovation. Chin expressed pride in initiating a project that will propel the nation to the forefront of EV battery development and innovation.

By establishing ASEAN’s first state-of-the-art EV and hydrogen-power testing, development and certification hub, Malaysia demonstrates its commitment to green technology and its determination to drive sustainable mobility solutions. This significant investment in the country’s future will not only contribute to the global fight against climate change but also position Malaysia as the centre for green technology advancements in the region. As the project progresses, it is expected to attract further attention and participation from both local and international stakeholders, fostering a collaborative environment for the development of cleaner, greener transportation solutions.
