Ask anyone in Kuala Lumpur what the countdown to Mid-Autumn Festival looks like, and they’ll tell you it’s not about the calendar at all. It’s the lanterns reappearing in shop windows, the sudden abundance of lotus paste and toasted pastry on every corner, and the growing list of who needs a mooncake box this year (or who needs the really good one). Gifting is the whole point of the season, and the box, more often than not, is where the real thought goes.

This year, The St. Regis Kuala Lumpur has taken that ritual and turned it into something closer to storytelling. Under the House of Astor, the hotel has unveiled The Jade Archive: At Moonrise (玉藏 · 月升之境), a mooncake collection woven from one of the festival’s oldest and most beloved legends: the tale of Chang’e’s flight to the moon, and the loyal Jade Rabbit who has kept her company ever since.

A Legend, Reimagined in Jade and Moonlight

Building a gifting collection around a story of longing and devotion is definitely poetic and beautiful. Chang’e and the Jade Rabbit have symbolised reunion and hope for generations, and it shows in every detail of this year’s trunks from The St. Regis. Soft jade tones ripple across the packaging, paired with celestial motifs and finishes that catch the light the way moonlit clouds do. It doesn’t feel like packaging so much as a small piece of folklore you get to hold in your hands.

And that, really, is the point. These aren’t boxes meant to be torn open and discarded. They’re designed to linger — on a shelf, on a tea table, in the corner of a room where they’ll catch your eye months from now and pull you right back to this particular autumn.

Beyond the Mooncake: Trunks Built to Be Kept

The Luxury and Classic Mooncake Trunks anchor this year’s collection, each one a study in restraint and craftsmanship rather than excess. Their interiors draw inspiration from the hotel’s own signature bird and butterfly installations, a detail that feels like a small love letter to the property itself.

The Luxury Trunk, in particular, comes with a few lovely surprises tucked inside. A pair of limited-edition Chinese tea cups pays homage to the butterflies of the Perdana Botanical Gardens, one of the city’s quieter, more treasured green spaces. There’s also a tea tray designed to be lifted straight out of the box and repurposed. A small, thoughtful gesture that turns a one-time gift into something you’ll actually reach for again and again, long after the mooncakes themselves are gone. For those who like their celebrations a little more spirited, The Macallan Rare Cask is available as a pairing, bringing a note of indulgence to the whole affair.

Then there’s the Super Mooncake Trunk, which returns this year as the collection’s showstopper. Finished in the same jade-inspired palette as the rest of the range, it’s built to house a striking 6.5-inch mooncake filled with eight golden egg yolks — a flavour and a sight that speaks, unmistakably, of abundance and togetherness. Its architectural silhouette alone makes it present itself as a gorgeous centrepiece.

A Season Worth Savouring

At its heart, The Jade Archive: At Moonrise (玉藏 · 月升之境) is a reminder that gifting, done well, is its own kind of storytelling. Every trunk carries a little of the legend it’s named for, and a little of the giver’s intention too, which is a wish for reunion, for luck, for another year spent close to the people who matter.

The collection is priced from MYR338 nett per trunk and available until 7th October 2026. Guests who confirm their orders by 15th August 2026 will enjoy an early bird privilege of 20% off, making it well worth planning your gifting list a little early this year.
