Originating from 17th-century Murano, Italy, aventurine is famously known as a “fortunate accident.” According to legend, a Venetian glassmaker accidentally dropped copper filings into a vat of molten glass, creating a shimmering, translucent material that perfectly mimics the infinite depth of a star-filled sky.

In the workshops of Bell & Ross, this material is treated with the reverence of a gemstone. Because aventurine is notoriously fragile and prone to micro-cracks during temperature shifts, artisans must cut and drill the glass with micron-level precision. The dial of the BR-05 36MM is constructed by layering this delicate glass plate over a rigid brass base, creating a window into deep space that is both visually stunning and structurally sound.

A Map of Diamonds

Tracing across this midnight-blue expanse is the Eagle constellation (Aquila), a symbol of power and freedom that has guided navigators for centuries. Bell & Ross has used seven diamonds to recreate the exact astronomical position of the stars that form the silhouette of this majestic bird.

The Brightest Star: The largest diamond, positioned between 10 and 11 o’clock, represents Altair, the crown of the constellation and one of the vertices of the Summer Triangle.

A Sparkling Totem: In total, the dial features 18 diamonds of three different sizes. Eleven of these serve as the primary hour markers, while the remaining stones complete the constellation’s outline.

Expert Gem-Setting: Each stone is mounted in a custom-made brass setting secured by four prongs. This meticulous manual process ensures that the stones catch the light from every angle without putting undue stress on the fragile aventurine plate.
