A culinary journey – it’s a phrase we hear a lot, usually to describe an exquisite dining experience that transports your senses through a symphony of tastes and textures. But what if that journey wasn’t just confined to your plate? What if you could actually embark on a physical adventure, traversing across breathtaking landscapes, all while indulging in an unparalleled culinary odyssey? Now that’s a culinary “journey” that truly takes the word to a whole new level!
Now, introducing the “Tastes of Tomorrow” by the visionary Chef André Chiang. It’s a three-night luxurious expedition by the Eastern & Oriental Express from 6th to 9th October 2025, beginning in the vibrant city of Singapore and winding through the captivating green landscapes of Malaysia. As the train gracefully glides along the tracks, you’ll be on a physical journey, yes, but within its elegant, wheeled cabins, you’ll simultaneously set off on a culinary adventure as well.
The undeniable star of this extraordinary journey is, of course, the culinary offerings by Chef André Chiang. He’s not merely preparing meals; he’s crafting experiences, weaving together the finest threads of Southeast Asian dining. But here’s where it gets truly exciting: Chef André Chiang is bringing his unique vision and inventive twists to menus originally crafted by other Michelin-starred maestros earlier this year, including the renowned Vicky Cheng, Jason Liu, and Jungsik Yim. This makes it a celebration of culinary camaraderie, while also offering a fresh and imaginative reinterpretation of Southeast Asian cuisine. And to perfectly complement these delectable dishes, guests will be delighted to find exceptional cocktails in the Observation Car, all meticulously curated by the celebrated mixologist and cocktail curator Shelley Tai. Picture yourself sipping on an inventive concoction, the setting sun painting the sky in fiery hues outside, as the train trudges through the deepening twilight. Sure sounds like a travel dream, doesn’t it?
While the culinary offerings are undoubtedly a highlight of the trip, the entire expedition on the tracks itself promises to be an experience to remember. Here is a fun schedule of what the trip will include.
Day One
Your grand adventure begins at Singapore’s Woodlands train station. As the train smoothly pulls away, making its way towards Gemas, Negeri Sembilan, you’ll settle into your modern, cosy cabin. Imagine yourself sinking into plush furnishings, a cup of afternoon tea steaming gently beside you, as the world outside transforms into a moving tapestry of lush landscapes. This delightful afternoon tea also serves as your first chance to meet the culinary visionary himself, Chef André Chiang. As evening descends, a wonderful dinner awaits you in the elegant dining car, setting the tone for the indulgent days ahead.
Day Two
The second day is when you’ll arrive in Kuala Lumpur. After a delectable breakfast, you’ll find yourself gazing out at the Jungle Railway, a verdant corridor cutting through some of Malaysia’s wildest parts, leading you towards Taman Negara, Kuala Lumpur.
After lunch, the train will arrive at Merapoh station, where you’ll alight for truly immersive experiences within the Taman Negara National Park. Here, you have the exciting choice of four extraordinary excursions:
- Explore the Malayan Tiger Habitat: A chance to learn about these magnificent creatures in their natural environment.
- Immerse yourself in the Jungle with a Nature Photographer: Capture the raw beauty of the rainforest.
- Explore magnificent caves using e-bicycles: A thrilling adventure into the earth’s ancient chambers.
- Indulge in unique naturesque wellness experiences: Think forest bathing and sound meditation, allowing the tranquility of the jungle to wash over you.
As evening beckons, it’s time to return to the comforting yet elegant embrace of the train. After a day of journeying out in the “wild”, it’s time for yet another culinary journey: the curated dinner experience by Chef André Chiang. The evening then culminates in the Piano Bar Car, where lively local entertainment ensures a splendid time for all.
Day Three
Day three – the train will head further north to Penang, a treasure trove of culture and cuisine. Here, you have a plethora of fascinating options to spend your day with:
- For Art Lovers: Explore George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with its vibrant architecture and an abundance of local artists’ studios.
- For Food Aficionados: Delight in learning about Peranakan cooking, perhaps even purchasing local culinary specialities or mastering delicious local dishes in a hands-on cookery class.
- For Independent Explorers: Grab a map and jump aboard a trishaw (complete with a friendly driver!) to wind through George Town’s enchanting streets at your own pace.
- In the afternoon, you’ll return to the train at Butterworth for a leisurely lunch. The afternoon onboard offers a chance to relax and rejuvenate. Perhaps a visit to the Dior Spa for some pampering? Or, if your adventurous spirit still calls, a stroll through the Malaysian city of Ipoh could be a great option as well.
As evening approaches, prepare for an exclusive treat: an exclusive cocktail tasting onboard, featuring an inventive and intriguing menu by the acclaimed mixologist Shelly Tai, with each sip recalling Singapore’s rich heritage and culture.
The grand finale of the evening is a special Four-Hands Dinner, crafted also by Chef André Chiang. Anticipate authentic Asian flavours reinterpreted with artistry and passion, a true masterpiece on a plate. To top it all off, there will be fabulous evening entertainment, ensuring your final night on board is nothing short of spectacular.
Day Four
On the fourth day, as the sun casts its golden glow over the Malaysian landscape, you’ll enjoy a final, delectable breakfast in the dining car, gazing out at the windows as the train gently makes its way back to the Woodlands train station in Singapore. You’ll disembark not just with souvenirs, but with a priceless new stash of unforgettable memories – the tastes, sights, and sounds of a truly extraordinary journey (both physical and culinary!)
