Born and raised in Milan, Mario Balsamo spent his childhood immersed in drawing and playing with his friends – much like any other aspiring child. However, Balsamo was a child with a burning passion. Following his passion, he pursued formal studies in Fine Arts and Graphic Design. His journey then took him to Rome, where he had the invaluable opportunity to apprentice under the renowned master painter Stefano di Stasio. It wasn’t long before his own work began to gain recognition, leading to exhibitions and a string of awards.

In 2004, Mario relocated to Bali, where he continued to teach and sell his captivating art globally. Then, in 2006, he made the move to Malaysia, settling in Kuala Lumpur where he has continued to teach and hold workshops, sharing his extensive knowledge and unique artistic vision.

A Stroll Through Wonder

Mario Balsamo’s artistic style is a fascinating blend of contemporary techniques and traditional knowledge. His work often focuses on human experiences and relationships, which gives his artworks a deeply personal and relatable feel. A stroll through his art studio truly would leave your mind expanded with wonder.

Balsamo delves into the psychological terrain between reality and dream with his evocative pieces. His works explore the symbolic potential of the human figure and the natural world, reimagining these elements within quiet, often psychologically charged spaces. He draws inspiration from the atmospheric tension found in the works of artists like Balthus and Antonio Mancini, and is also influenced by contemporary painters who skilfully navigate the line between realism and the surreal.

He constructs visual narratives that resist easy interpretation, inviting viewers to ponder and explore. Each painting masterfully captures a suspended moment, which is both ordinary and otherworldly, hinting at profound emotional truths.

My work investigates the threshold between reality and dream, using figurative oil painting to explore internal landscapes that feel both intimate and uncanny. Drawing from the visual language of surrealism, I construct symbolic narratives that blur the line between the physical body and the unconscious mind.

Trained in classical techniques, I approach painting as a layered, meditative process, one that mirrors the psychological complexity of memory, identity, and illusion. I’m especially interested in how familiar forms, faces, hands, and elements of nature, can be subtly transformed into something disquieting, prompting viewers to reconsider their own perceptions.

Ultimately, my practice is rooted in ambiguity and emotional resonance. I am less concerned with resolution than with creating a space for stillness, introspection, and the quiet tension of the unspoken.
