Bentley’s Continental GT has long epitomized the perfect fusion of power, prestige, and poise. Now, in its fourth generation, this grand tourer enters a new era — one that embraces electrification without compromising its essence.

When Bentley first introduced the Continental GT in 2003, it was built on the ill-fated Volkswagen Phaeton’s underpinnings. Yet, against the odds, it became a roaring success, paving the way for the Flying Spur in 2006. Fast-forward to 2018, and the Continental GT evolved onto a more sophisticated platform shared with the Porsche Panamera, delivering sharper handling and improved dynamics. Now, the latest iteration arrives with significant changes, both aesthetic and mechanical, making it the most advanced Continental GT yet.

At first glance, the refreshed design is unmistakably Bentley, yet subtly redefined. The traditional dual-headlamp arrangement is gone, replaced by single LED headlamps inspired by the 1959 S2 Continental. These crystal-like units, with intricate ‘eyelash’ detailing, add a modern yet timeless elegance. At the rear, elongated diamond-patterned taillights and a reshaped boot lid give the car an added dose of sophistication. Completing the muscular stance are 22-inch wheels designed to resemble a feline’s claws—Bentley describes the car’s presence as a “poised tiger,” ready to pounce.

For those who seek further individuality, Bentley offers new bespoke colors, including the striking Gravity Grey and Tourmaline Green. As ever, customization remains key to the Continental GT’s identity.

Slide into the cockpit, and you’re enveloped in Bentley’s signature craftsmanship. The Continental GT Speed First Edition, our test model, boasts nearly $200,000 worth of additional bespoke features. A new precision quilt pattern, inspired by modern fashion design, adorns the seats and door panels, elevating the interior’s already lavish feel.

Seating comfort is unparalleled, with 20-way adjustable seats that offer an optional Wellness package featuring Postural Adjust and Auto Climate functions—ideal for long-haul journeys. For audiophiles, three premium sound systems are available, topping out with the 2,200W Naim system and its 18 speakers, setting a benchmark in automotive audio. Meanwhile, the Bentley Rotating Display remains a highlight, effortlessly shifting between a 12.3-inch touchscreen, classic analogue dials, or a veneer panel, depending on the driver’s preference.

Ambient lighting with 30 color options ensures that mood and atmosphere are tailored to perfection. And for those who demand true exclusivity, Bentley’s Mulliner Bespoke Program remains the gateway to crafting a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

Beneath the sculpted bonnet lies the most profound transformation — the legendary 6.0-litre W12 is no more, replaced by a cutting-edge 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid. This powertrain generates a staggering 782 PS and 1,000 Nm of torque, making it the most powerful Continental GT to date. Bentley claims an impressive 859 km of range, making inter-city travel effortless.

If those figures sound familiar, it’s because they closely mirror those of the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. However, Bentley has fine-tuned the system with a larger 25.9 kWh battery, granting up to 81 km of pure electric driving at speeds of up to 140 km/h. While city commutes can be accomplished in near silence, few will resist unleashing the full potential of the hybrid system.

The numbers speak for themselves — 0-100 km/h in just 3.2 seconds, half a second quicker than the outgoing W12 model, and a top speed of 335 km/h. Despite gaining nearly 200 kg due to the hybrid system, the GT Speed’s performance remains astonishing. The electric motor’s instant torque virtually eliminates turbo lag, delivering a seamless surge of power.

Handling remains razor-sharp, thanks to Bentley’s Performance Active Chassis, which includes Active All-Wheel Drive, torque vectoring, and an electronic limited-slip differential. Interestingly, the hybrid setup improves weight distribution with the rear-mounted battery pack, bringing it closer to an ideal 49:51 split—an advantage over the W12, which always felt a tad nose-heavy.

For those who demand ultimate stopping power, Bentley offers two braking options: massive 420mm ventilated cast iron discs or high-performance 440mm carbon-silicon-carbide brakes. An updated ESC system now allows controlled rear axle slip in Dynamic Mode, ensuring spirited driving without compromising safety.

Bentley has fine-tuned the driving modes to cater to every preference. The default Bentley Mode balances comfort and performance, making it the ideal setting for everyday use. Comfort Mode softens the ride but sacrifices agility, while Sport Mode stiffens the chassis for dynamic cornering. However, in urban settings, Sport Mode’s firmness can feel a tad excessive, reaffirming Bentley Mode as my choice.
A crucial innovation is Bentley’s 48V active anti-roll system. Bentley’s system resists body roll only when necessary, allowing the dual-chamber air suspension to maintain a plush ride while cruising and still delivering crisp handling in corners. The result? A grand tourer that remains supple yet capable, offering the best of both worlds.

Throughout its evolution, the Bentley Continental GT has masterfully blended grand touring luxury with exhilarating performance. While this new hybrid model may not be a radical departure from its predecessor, it represents the next logical step — one that ensures Bentley’s legacy thrives in an era of electrification.

For purists bemoaning the W12’s departure, the hybrid V8 more than compensates with its increased power, efficiency, and broader capability. Whether gliding on electric power or surging forward with all 782 PS at full throttle, this new Continental GT isn’t just keeping up with the times — it’s redefining what a grand tourer should be.
