Ironman’s URWERK Auctioned Off For Charity
While the smoke still rises and we’re all still reeling from MCU’s big one, Avengers: Infinity War, the drama is still ensuing over in Geneva, where the very watch that was worn by Ironman/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) in Spiderman: Homecoming, was finally auctioned off last weekend.
In case you missed it, it’s the very same model that was worn all throughout by superhero Ironman’s alter-ego, Tony Stark, in the hit movie from last year. And to note, the URWERK timepiece is actually very reflective of Tony Stark’s flamboyant and eccentric nature.
When we did some research, we found out that the this URWERK UR-110 RG watch was actually personally requested by Downey Jr for the movie. If you’ve watched the movie, you’ll definitely recall moments when the flamboyant billionaire-inventor uses his wristwatch to as part of his arsenal of gadgets to aid Spiderman/Peter Parker.
Fetching a fitting price of USD150,000 (about RM560,000) at the charity auction last weekend, this timepiece was of course draped in Ironman’s iconic red and yellow colour schemes, with 18-karat rose gold and black titanium accents ever present. And it goes without saying, that the sum raised from the sale of this unique timepiece is in aid of a specific charitable foundation- the Manusodany organization, a non-profit organisation that reaches out to the underprivileged children of Haiti.
As for the timepiece in itself, the UR-110 Torpedo specifically uses a system of orbiting satellites to indicate the time on the right side of the watch. A planetary gear system keeps the satellites turning and the movement also consists of three counter-rotating hour modules and a central carousel. Time is always shown on the right side of the watch and the satellites follow a vertically arced line, graded from 0 to 60 minutes, in a downward motion.
It gets its ‘Torpedo’ name from the arrow-shaped “torpedoes” in parallel formation that function to to indicate the time as they pass the 60-minute track. As for the timepiece’s movement, it uses the Calibre UR 9.01, a mechanical, automatic winding movement with 39 hours of power reserve which is typical of URWERK’s radical design philosophy. One thing’s for sure though, you’re definitely thinking of re-watching Spiderman: Homecoming now, aren’t you?
