Ruud van der Stroom, Heesen’s Chief Commercial Officer.

Project Orion is the newest member of Heesen’s esteemed 50-metre FDFH aluminium series with hybrid propulsion. It represents the pinnacle of innovation in hybrid yacht technology. This series leverages cutting-edge engineering and design principles to deliver unparalleled performance, efficiency, and environmental sustainability.

The yacht’s innovative design, featuring a Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDFH) conceived by naval architects van Oossanen, coupled with lightweight aluminium construction, allows for a compact machinery package that optimises propulsion efficiency across all speeds. Equipped with twin MTU 12V 2000 M61 (IMO III) engines, Project Orion delivers a top speed of 16.3 knots with each engine generating 600kW. In hybrid mode, fuel consumption is significantly reduced to 45 litres per hour at 10 knots, setting a new standard for fuel efficiency in the 50-meter yacht category. The yacht also demonstrates exceptional fuel efficiency. At a cruising speed of 12 knots, it consumes a mere 98 litres of fuel per hour, excluding hotel load. In hybrid mode, fuel consumption is further reduced to 45 litres per hour at 10 knots.

As for the exterior, it was designed by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. Featuring a near-vertical bow and expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, the yacht is not only visually stunning but also offers excellent functionality, ensuring smooth navigation.

The interior, designed by Italian designer Cristiano Gatto, boasts a stunning ocean view along with maximising natural light. The layout includes six staterooms, including a spacious master suite on the main deck, a full-beam VIP cabin, and four additional staterooms placed on the lower deck. The open bulwarks amplify the sense of space and connection to the sea, making the yacht a perfect option for both private and charter use.

Project Orion showcases Heesen’s dedication to innovation, combining both technology and design to create a unique yacht. The yacht will undergo system commissioning and rigorous testing in the North Sea by mid-February.
