Nestled within the vibrant, book-lined walls of Tsutaya Books Pavillion Bukit Jalil, an exhibition is stirring hearts and minds. From the 3rd of March until the 4th of May 2025, the “See, Hear, Speak” exhibition, presented by the artist Denise Khoo, is offering a powerful, contemporary re-examination of a timeless proverb. Held in conjunction with International Women’s Day and Sexual Assault Awareness Month, this exhibition is far more than a collection of art; it’s a call to action.

You might be asking, what’s it all about? Well, it takes the age-old saying, “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil,” and flips it on its head. Instead of advocating for passive observance, Khoo’s work demands active engagement. The exhibition challenges the notion that silence is golden, particularly when faced with injustice. It shines a stark light on the devastating impact of sexual violence, especially on the most vulnerable: children.

Imagine a child’s world, fragile and innocent, shattered by violence. The exhibition doesn’t shy away from the harsh reality of the deep physical, emotional, and psychological scars left behind. It’s a clear reminder that silence isn’t just an absence of sound; it’s a breeding ground for harm. The artist paints a vivid picture: silence as a heavy, suffocating blanket, smothering truth and justice.

But this exhibition isn’t about dwelling in despair. In fact, it’s a beacon of hope, a call for open dialogue. Each sculpture at this exhibition speaks volumes. Take, for instance, this gnome – a powerful symbol of protection for women who have dared to speak up, who have stood firm against the tide of silence. It’s a visual metaphor, a tiny figure carrying the weight of courage.

The exhibition’s sculptures, each a thought-provoking piece, relay messages of resilience and resistance. They are like frozen moments of truth, capturing the essence of the exhibition’s purpose. The artist’s use of form and space invites visitors to pause, to contemplate, and to truly see, hear, and speak.

The exhibition is more than just an artistic endeavour; it’s a commitment to change. 10% of the proceeds will be donated to the Women’s Aid Organisation, a testament to the exhibition’s dedication to supporting survivors. It’s a tangible way to turn art into action.

You don’t have to be a woman to stand up for what’s right. This exhibition is a call to everyone. If you’ve ever felt the urge to make a difference, to challenge the status quo, then this exhibition held at Tsutaya Books Pavillion Bukit Jalil is the place to be. Wander through the aisles, let the sculptures speak to you, and join the movement to break the silence. After all, the most powerful voices are often those that dare to speak the truth.
