Powertrain

Internal Combustion Engine in the F80

F80

The F80’s 3-litre 120°V6 F163CF engine represents the pinnacle of Ferrari’s six-cylinder technology. It delivers an astonishing 900 hp, setting a new record for specific power at 300 cv/l. This electric front axle (e-4WD) and rear motor (MGU-K) further enhance performance with an additional 300 cv.

The F80’s powertrain strongly connects to motorsport, especially endurance racing. Its architecture and components closely resemble those of the 499P, a two-time Le Mans winner. Shared elements include the architecture, crankcase, layout, timing system drive chains, oil pump recovery circuit, bearing, injectors, and GDI pumps. 

The F80’s engine is a technological marvel, combining Formula 1-derived components with innovative advancements. Moreover, it’s meticulously calibrated for maximum performance and features statistical knock control for higher combustion chamber pressures.

Hybrid Powertrain

The F80’s electric motors are Ferrari’s own creations, designed for maximum performance and weight reduction. Moreover, their Halbach array configuration and carbon fibre magnet sleeve are inspired by Formula 1 technology.

The underbody’s low-pressure zone creates a powerful upwash, contributing to 150 kg of front downforce. The active suspension maintains aerodynamic balance.

The rear wing-diffuser system generates 590 kg of downforce. The diffuser’s efficiency is maximised by the engine-gearbox unit’s inclination and rear chassis configuration. The chassis geometry creates an aerodynamic seal effect.

The active wing, controlled by the actuator system, adjusts height and angle of attack for precise downforce and drag modulation. The rear wing is the cornerstone of the adaptive aero system, allowing the F80 to adapt to various dynamic conditions.

Heat Management

The F80’s cooling system balances engine and hybrid system thermal needs with aerodynamic requirements. Moreover, radiators are strategically positioned for optimal airflow. In addition, innovative solutions like transparent windscreen demisting and electrically actuated valves improve thermal balance.

Furthermore, the front features condensers and high-temperature radiators. The hot air venting is optimised to avoid interfering with front aerodynamics. Additionally, the F80’s flank incorporates a channel that protects the airflow from thermal contamination and guides it to the inlet.

Finally, the braking system features innovative solutions, including a front duct that channels cold air to the discs, pads and callipers. This patented solution increases cooling airflow by 20% compared to the LaFerrari without compromising front aerodynamics.

Vehicle Dynamics

F80

Chassis and Bodyshell of the F80

Chassis

F80

The F80’s chassis uses a multi-material approach, with carbon fibre, aluminium and titanium components. Moreover, the subframes are made of extrusions and castings, while the tub features hollow carbon fibre sills and a carbon fibre roof.

Furthermore, the sills act as side impact absorbers. The asymmetric cabin layout optimises side impact protection. In addition, the front impact-absorbing longerons contribute to heat management. Finally, a new casting solution reduces wall thickness and weight while increasing stiffness and NVH.

Bodyshell

The F80’s bodyshell is made from pre-preg carbon fibre, using Formula 1-derived technology. The front bonnet features an S-Duct connecting the front wings.

Like the LaFerrari, the F80 has butterfly doors with a dual-axis hinge mechanism. The doors’ substructure is made of high-performance carbon fibre. 

The rear engine cover echoes the door’s styling and includes vents for hot air and a grille.

Design of the F80

Exterior
