Rolls-Royce Motor Cars have done it again, living up to their reputation with the new Spectre Lunaflair – a Bespoke commission for a prominent client from the United States. The highlight of the one-of-one Spectre Lunaflair is unmistakably its phenomenal coachwork, using a holographic paint finish to create a shimmering “rainbow” effect, sure to mesmerise anyone who set their eyes on the lovely automobile.

The Spectre Lunaflair was partially inspired by a previous Rolls-Royce Bespoke creation, which is the one-of-one Phantom Syntopia. It had a stunning, dark iridescent Liquid Noir paint job with a colour-shifting, mirror-like pigment. Fascinated by this, the commissioning client of the Spectre Lunaflair asked for a light and luminous version of the car, which had its concept based on the lunar halo phenomenon – an optical phenomenon that appears as a colourful ring of light around the moon. This phenomenon is caused by moonlight passing through ice crystals in the sky, which act like tiny prisms, bending and refracting the light, creating a technicolour ring effect.

Such an ethereal natural phenomenon surely is a sight to behold, but replicating that effect through manmade means is no easy task. The Bespoke Collective went through an arduous, one-year journey of developing the paint finish that could successfully imitate the lunar halo phenomenon. To realise the client’s visionary concept, the Bespoke team meticulously experimented with various paint chemistries, application techniques, and base coats. The final finish is accomplished through seven layers of lacquer, including a specially formulated pearlescent coat infused with delicate flakes of magnesium fluoride and aluminium. This intricate composition creates a deep metallic sheen in low light, but when bathed in sunlight, it bursts forth into a dazzling rainbow technicolour display.

The power of Bespoke is fueled by their fascinating display of creativity. The mesh of brilliant ideas – like how a previous Bespoke creation is able to inspire a completely new one, with a different concept and story – ensures a constant flow of creativity, allowing the Bespoke Collective to continue to innovate and advance their craft. Only one of the Spectre Lunaflair will ever be produced, as expected of it being a one-of-one Bespoke creation. Though that is the case, the Bespoke Collective has the entire future at their hands, with more opportunities to produce more one-of-a-kind creations that fit the client’s visions down to the smallest details.

Perfectly paired with the Spectre Lunaflair’s magnificent exterior, the interior is also nothing to scoff at. It features Navy Blue, White, and Peony Pink tones reminiscent of a lunar halo’s vibrant hues. These colours adorn the seats, doors, and the Starlight Headliner, while the steering wheel boasts a dual-tone, with a Navy Blue outer and an Arctic White inner.

“We are constantly astounded by the diversity of ideas that inform our clients’ Bespoke concepts, which frequently draw inspiration from materials, finishes and themes they see in other commissions. Spectre Lunaflair is the perfect example of this, exploring the ethereal beauty of a lunar halo and sparked by the client after witnessing a paint finish on another Bespoke motor car. This symbiotic relationship and cross-pollination of ideas is fostering a ‘virtuous circle’ of innovation and creativity, which is incredibly important to our team of Bespoke designers, as we focus on delivering unparalleled value to those who entrust us with their vision,” says Martina Starke, Head of Bespoke Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
