As of 12 September 2024, the new, locally assembled Mercedes-Benz E Class and the GLC 350 e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid have officially been launched in Malaysia.

The new E Class comes in two variants, the E 200 AVANTGARDE equipped with an internal combustion engine (ICE) and the E 350 e AMG Line plug-in hybrid. These sedans are designed to “Evolve With You”, as it contains advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology that is capable of learning the driver’s daily habits and routines. It can learn the user’s preferred settings, what time they perform certain actions such as rolling down the car window or cranking up the AC, thus making for an automated and seamless user experience.

“The new E-Class represents both a transformative evolution and a bold leap forward in luxury. It is the most intelligent business sedan ever, intuitively learning your routines. With electrified options ranging from a refined combustion engine to a state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid, it sets a new standard for responsible luxury. This is more than just a car—it’s a symbol of status and sophistication, designed to seamlessly adapt to and elevate your lifestyle. The new E-Class offers a personalised driving experience that redefines what it means to travel in style. For both loyal enthusiasts and a new generation of drivers in Malaysia, this vehicle is about relishing every moment with unmatched comfort, cutting-edge innovation, and timeless elegance,” says Amanda Zhang, CEO & President of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia.

The exterior design is sleek, with a short front overhang and long bonnet. The E Class expertly combines both traditional and modern elements with a black panel-like surface connecting the headlamps and radiator grille. The grille is patterned with chrome stars, a signature for the brand. While the E 200 applies high-performance LED headlamps with Adaptive High Beam Assist, the E 350 e features DIGITAL LIGHT technology with Adaptive High Beam Assist Plus. Both variations of the new E Class retains Mercedes-Benz daytime running light design, complete with the striking, eyebrow-shaped lights for a stunning frontal appearance.

The E Class’ rear design is just as remarkable. The two-section LED taillights produce a distinct and apparent light display, day or night, complete with a new contour and its unmistakable signature star motif. The rear’s width is further highlighted by the smooth link of the rear lights and the v-shaped boot lid design, which is complimented by a chrome trim bar along its rear edge.

Additionally, the E 350 e features a panoramic sliding sunroof, which is not available in the E 200. This exclusive feature elevates the luxury automotive experience, illuminating the interior with ample natural light and accentuating its elegance. The design incorporates a dynamic glass contour and a unified central and outer air vent.

The E 350 e’s MBUX Superscreen converts the dashboard into a futuristic digital hub, featuring a 14.4-inch central display and a 12.3-inch driver display all integrated into a single glass surface thus enhancing usability. The E 200, however, has a refined open-pore black ash wood trim that is backlit with Mercedes-Benz’ signature pattern. The floating central display creates an airy vibe for the interior. The E 200 features Ambient Lighting and for the E 350 e, Active Ambient Lighting, which stretches from the instrument panel to the doors. The centre console in both E Class models include a stowage compartment, cup holders, a soft padded armrest and USB ports. The futuristic dashboard is mirrored in the door panels, which feature high-tech controls.

The seating is luxurious, with carefully stitched leather seats ensuring optimal comfort, which further highlights the elegant experience of driving the Mercedes-Benz.

The new MBUX Superscreen is smarter and much more intuitive, equipped with an AI system that memorises and learns the user’s habits and daily routine, a cutting-edge voice assistant capable of commands and conversations, as well as various apps and music and video streaming services to stay connected wherever while on the road.

The sound system in both variants are immaculate. The E 200 has 7 speakers, and the E 350 e boasts a total of 21 speakers. The Burmester® system also integrates Dolby Atmos® and Spatial Audio for a 360-degree sound experience, creating an immersive sound experience by using up the entire space to produce a unique sound animation.

To top it off, the Digital Vehicle Key is now available for the iPhone and Apple Watch, easing the process of accessing the vehicle. Key sharing is also possible with multiple other people, family members and friends for example, and the car is also able to recognise several users at once.

The aerodynamics on the E Class have improved in multiple ways, resulting in smooth driving with maximised noise comfort. The improvements include:

  • Refined contours including the tyres
  • Front section sealing with side-sealing of the bonnet and an aero-lip in the radiator grille
  • Wheels featuring cladding called “aeroblinds”
  • Specialised spoilers at the front and rear wheels
  • Flush, retractable door handles
  • Enhanced underbody with new materials (2-component main floor with moulded-on sealing lips) and improved design (ramp-shaped spoiler lips, aerodynamic cladding on suspension components)

The new E Class is equipped with AGILITY CONTROL suspension, which features a selective damping system for a comfortable and stable ride on the road.

The new E-Class sets new efficiency standards through systematic electrification and smart downsizing. The E 200 features a four-cylinder engine with needs-based electrification. The petrol engine uses an integrated starter-generator (ISG) as well as turbocharging. The new battery in the mild-hybrid boosts the electric motor’s power from 15 kW to 17 kW and the boost torque to 205 Nm. The E 350 e has an electric output of 95 kW (129 hp) and a range of up to 118 km, allowing it to drive for multiple days solely on electricity. Its system output goes up to 230 kW (313 hp).

With an instant 550 Nm peak torque from the electric motor, quick acceleration and dynamic performance is made possible. The full electric power is capped at 140 km/h. The E Class provides two additional driving modes. The first is the BATTERY HOLD which maintains the charge state of the high-voltage battery based on the given driving situation. The second is ELECTRIC, which adapts Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC for electric driving up to 140 km/h as well as activation of the combustion engine.

In addition, there is the electromechanical brake booster that utilises seamless automatic controls of the brake, and a thermal management system that controls the temperature of the battery independently of the vehicle’s climate control. It ensures consistent performance in any weather conditions as well as supporting quick charging with direct current.

The Driving Assistance Plus package includes Active Steering Assist which allows for automatic driving and Active Parking Assist which automatically parks and unparks the vehicle. The abundance of high technology and state-of-the-art functions truly create an enjoyable driving experience.
