The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort asserts its commitment to sustainability as it proudly announces the completion of a new solar energy project. The resort, located in Baa Atoll – also known as the first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve site in the Maldives – took the initiative to further preserve the earth with this solar energy project, proving that luxury and comfort can indeed coexist with sustainability. This project will make the resort more environmentally friendly as it significantly cuts its energy consumption.

The solar energy project is immensely successful in its efforts to reduce energy consumption. The project will cut the resort’s diesel consumption by 135,000 litres annually, which results in a whole 361,800 kg reduction in carbon emissions. To put this into perspective, this substantial amount of reduction has the same benefit as planting 16,400 trees – which, of course, is no small number. This just speaks further to the importance of conserving energy. The success of the project is largely due to its location as well. Because the Maldives is a tropical island, it is graced with a year-round tropical climate. This ensures that the resort will receive an ample and consistent amount of sunlight throughout the year, making full use of the solar panels installed.

A total of 650 new solar panels were installed and placed discreetly at the heart of the island. These solar panels are able to generate about 6 hours of electricity every day, saving the resort over USD 135,000 yearly.

With the solar energy project, the Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort highlights its dedication to minimising its environmental impact. Besides the project, the resort has also adopted other eco-friendly initiatives. These include a food composter that turns food scraps into fertiliser and a machine that recycles broken glass into umbrella stands for the villas.

“As an island resort, sustainability is key, and we are committed to creating solutions to minimise the impact we have on this beautiful eco-system. The new panels will serve to harness the sunshine we are blessed with in the Maldives and reduce our reliance on energy sources such as diesel,” says Vijay Kumar, General Manager of The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort.
