Nestled within the enchanting embrace of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Sri Lanka, lies Fort Bazaar – a boutique hotel that’s not just a place to stay, but a living testament to history and a beacon of contemporary elegance. Imagine stepping into a meticulously restored 17th-century merchant’s home, where spice and gem traders once plied their wares. That’s the captivating essence of Fort Bazaar, a retreat that beautifully marries old-world charm with modern luxury.

Since its revival in 2016 by Teardrop Hotels, after nearly a decade of dedicated restoration from a long-neglected building, Fort Bazaar has blossomed into one of the region’s most cherished sanctuaries. And this year, it’s embarking on an exciting new chapter, unveiling a series of enchantments that promise an even more unforgettable escape for its discerning guests.

Dive into Tranquillity: The Long-Awaited Courtyard Pool

Galle Fort, while brimming with charm, can also be quite spirited, and the tropical heat is a constant companion. This is precisely why Fort Bazaar’s brand-new swimming pool is such a welcome addition. Tucked away just beyond the central courtyard, this 14-metre aquatic haven offers a serene reprieve. Picture yourself lounging on chic four-poster sunbeds, a refreshing drink in hand, as the dappled sunlight dances on the water. It’s an intimate yet expansive space, completing the hotel’s transformation into a true oasis within the bustling fort walls.

A Private Escape: Introducing Court Square Studio

For those seeking an even more exclusive retreat, Fort Bazaar has unveiled its latest gem: the Court Square Studio. Just a mere 150 metres from the main hotel, this exquisite split-level suite is housed within a cluster of historic lawyers’ chambers on Leyn Baan Street. It’s a masterful blend of contemporary design and the fort’s rich heritage, offering a stylish and intimate sanctuary. Imagine waking up to panoramic views of the fort’s banyan tree – a truly artistic and soulful experience that captures the very essence of Gaelle’s living history. This addition expands Fort Bazaar’s offerings to a total of nineteen unique rooms, catering to every desire for privacy and proximity.

A Feast for the Senses: Church Street Social’s Refreshed Menu

Beyond the captivating architecture and tranquil spaces, Fort Bazaar has also cemented its reputation as a culinary destination, thanks to its vibrant restaurant, Church Street Social. Tucked behind the hotel’s carefully restored arches, it has quietly become one of the south coast’s most sought-after dining experiences, offering chic, all-day dining both indoors and in a leafy courtyard. And for the gin enthusiasts, the vibrant cocktail bar boasts one of the most extensive selections in the entire Fort!

Under the expert direction of Group Executive Chef Sumudu Kadawata and Fort Bazaar’s Executive Chef Sashika Wickramatunga, the new menu is a celebration of fresh, seasonal ingredients, proudly sourced from local farmers and fishermen along the southern coast. The result is a bold, multicultural take on bistro-style dining, inspired by Sri Lanka’s legendary spice routes, abundant coastal bounty and evolving culinary identity.

Mornings begin with authentic Sri Lankan staples like kola kanda, a delicately bitter and gently spiced herbal porridge made with gotukola, perfectly paired with buffalo curd and coconut treacle. Then, of course, there are the beloved bowl-shaped pancakes – hoppers, made from fermented rice flour and coconut milk.

As lunchtime approaches, guests can settle into the breezy veranda or the tranquil courtyard, a signature Arrack Attack cocktail in hand. The lunch and dinner menu is a symphony of flavours. Highlights include the authentic Ceylonese Rice and Curry, featuring succulent mud crab in coconut gravy with drumstick leaves, rich dry beef curry slow-cooked with roasted spices and the fiery Miris Malu seer fish curry, all served with an array of seasonal vegetable curries and crisp papadam.

While deeply rooted in Sri Lankan traditions, the menu also ventures into global flavours with a distinct island twist. Expect delightful surprises like the Pulled Jackfruit Burger, perfectly Steamed Whole Snapper and Grilled Yellowfin Tuna accompanied by local baby potatoes and green beans. Even pizza gets a local refresh with gotukola toppings, and the Grilled Jumbo Prawns are served with crusty kade paan.

With its enticing new pool, the exclusive Court Square Studio and a refreshed culinary journey at Church Street Social, Fort Bazaar continues to redefine luxury within the historic walls of Galle Fort. Whether you’re seeking a tranquil escape, a private sanctuary or an unforgettable culinary adventure, Fort Bazaar invites you to discover its vibrant new chapter.

Rates begin at MYR 1,760 per night for two people (inclusive of breakfast) for Fort Bazaar rooms, while the Court Square Studio offers an exclusive retreat starting from MYR 1,413 per night for two.
